Iran Tells Pakistan's Army Chief No Talks Until U.S. Meets Its Conditions as Brent Crude Nears $110 and More Tankers Are Hit Near Hormuz

October 21, 2026 · Category: World News

Iran used a high-profile mediation visit to restate its terms rather than soften them. Iran's top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, told Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, during his visit to Tehran on Tuesday, October 20, that "there will be no negotiations until America takes steps to build trust," starting with Iran's conditions, and that enriched nuclear material would not leave the country, according to Iranian state TV as compiled by Gulf News. Parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was blunter: "We have nothing new to say." Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said indirect talks continue through Pakistan and Qatar and that the Strait of Hormuz would stay closed unless Washington accepts Tehran's seven-day plan, under which the strait would fully reopen on the sixth day Tribune/IRNA.

At sea, the attacks kept coming. Britain's UKMTO maritime agency said a tanker was struck Wednesday by an "unknown projectile" off Oman near the strait, causing a fire but no crew injuries, and Iran's Revolutionary Guard said a supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude hit a mine south of the strait; that is an Iranian claim Gulf News. Ship tracker Kpler counted at least 18 vessel attacks in two weeks, Reuters reported, as Brent rose $1.32 to $110.11 a barrel early Wednesday.

Washington, meanwhile, is adding force. Fox News reported, citing two U.S. officials, that a third U.S. aircraft carrier and about 10,000 personnel are headed to the region, due by the end of November. President Trump told a Kansas rally Monday, "We could leave right now," adding that Iran would not get a nuclear weapon. Reuters also reported that Turkey will seek parliamentary approval to deploy troops to Saudi Arabia under a defense pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan Iran International/Reuters.

Why it matters

As of the morning of October 21, Iran's public position had hardened rather than moved toward a deal, even as mediators in Pakistan and Qatar kept channels open and the U.S. sent more forces. That combination keeps the Strait of Hormuz, and with it oil near $110 a barrel, at the center of the story two weeks before the U.S. midterms. Several battlefield claims above come from one side only.
