Iran Says Seven Tankers Were Hit or Struck Mines Near Hormuz Overnight, the Largest One-Day Toll of the War if Confirmed

October 22, 2026 · Category: World News

Iran's state television said Thursday, October 22, that seven oil tankers caught fire or were damaged overnight in and near the Strait of Hormuz, which the Associated Press said would be the largest single-day number of vessels damaged in the waterway since the war began on February 28, if verified. Quoting the Revolutionary Guard's navy, the report said four tankers were hit while transferring oil and three were immobilized by naval mines. Reuters reported the IRGC described the four as involved in "illegal oil transfers" in the northern Persian Gulf, with the mine strikes west of the strait.

The claim comes from one side, and that matters. Britain's UKMTO maritime monitor had not reported the attacks, AP said, though monitors have noted some shippers are reluctant to report incidents. The International Maritime Organization's confirmed-incident list stood at 120 confirmed incidents and 24 seafarer deaths as of October 22, with its latest entries dated October 20.

The Guard's statement also carried a warning: it may strike U.S. bases in the region if Washington keeps helping commercial ships move through the strait. That threat lands as the U.S. sends a third aircraft carrier and thousands more troops to join what AP called the largest force of American warships and aircraft in the Middle East in decades.

Diplomacy hasn't stopped, but it has stalled. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday that Tehran remains open to diplomacy but ready to defend itself, and earlier said indirect talks continue through Pakistan and Qatar, FXStreet reported, citing Reuters. Iran's seven-day plan would fully reopen the strait if the U.S. meets conditions including ending its blockade of Iranian ports, terms AP said echo the June deal that collapsed within days. President Trump rejected that proposal, and attacks on ships have increased since, according to AP.

Timing adds pressure on all sides. AP noted Israel holds close elections within days, and the U.S. midterms follow in early November, with war-linked fuel prices already a voter concern.

Why it matters

Hormuz is Iran's main point of leverage, and an escalation at sea raises the odds that U.S. and Israeli strikes resume, which AP said would endanger civilians and disrupt oil, gas and fertilizer flows from the Gulf. Until independent monitors confirm the overnight damage, the seven-tanker figure should be treated as Iran's claim, and readers should watch for UKMTO and IMO updates.
