Iran Says Seven Tankers Were Hit Near Hormuz as the U.S. Calls the Claims Fake and Israel Heads to the Polls

October 23, 2026 · Category: World News

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy said Thursday that four vessels it accused of illegal oil transfers in the northern Persian Gulf were hit and caught fire, and that three more struck mines west of the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported. The IRGC warned the U.S. military that "if this trend continues, the conflict will extend to its bases in the region," according to Al Jazeera, which noted the claims could not be independently verified and included no details on casualties or flags.

If accurate, it would be the largest single-day toll on the waterway since the U.S. and Israel began their war against Iran on Feb. 28. Washington pushed back hard. President Donald Trump wrote that Iran was "making up fake hits, mines, and everything else" to drive up oil prices before the U.S. midterm election, and said more oil now moves through Hormuz than before the conflict.

The shipping data sits somewhere between those positions. Tankers are still moving Gulf oil through a U.S.-protected lane near Oman, often at night with tracking systems switched off, according to Lloyd's List Intelligence, as reported by the Associated Press. That arrangement has brought volumes back to roughly prewar levels, but Lloyd's counted 28 attacks on ships in October, the most since the war began, and spot charter rates have climbed into the hundreds of thousands of dollars a day. Oil prices hit their highest level since May on Thursday, AP reported.

The political calendar adds pressure on both sides. Israel votes Oct. 27, and one former Israeli military intelligence Iran specialist told AP that a clear win for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would make another attack on Iran "almost guaranteed." Reuters has noted that Netanyahu and his main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, share hawkish positions on several regional issues. Meanwhile, war-linked prices are weighing on U.S. voters ahead of Nov. 3.

Diplomacy has not closed off. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday that Tehran remains open to talks but ready to defend itself, and U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric urged both governments to return to diplomacy and reopen the strait.

Why it matters

Roughly a fifth of the world's oil passed through Hormuz before the war. Rising attacks, an Israeli election and U.S. midterms are converging in the same week, raising the risk of renewed fighting and another energy-price shock.
