SpaceX's Push for 80,000 Cell Sites Hits Wireless Carriers and Lifts Tower Stocks

October 24, 2026 · Category: Business & Tech

On Friday, the market treated SpaceX's wireless ambitions as a real threat to the established carriers. Bloomberg reported late Thursday that SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) is in talks with infrastructure companies, including Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI), to secure access to at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites. According to Reuters, that would be about half of the roughly 158,500 purpose-built towers operating in the country last year, and it would be a concrete step toward a fourth nationwide carrier.

The reaction followed a clear pattern. AT&T (NYSE: T) fell 5.6% to a more than three-month low, T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) lost 5% and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) slipped 1.6%, Reuters reported. Deutsche Telekom, which owns more than half of T-Mobile, fell 3.2% in Germany. Tower landlords moved the other way. Crown Castle surged 11.6%, American Tower (NYSE: AMT) rose 4.9% and SBA Communications added 4.6%. SpaceX rose 1.7%.

This comes weeks after SpaceX bought nationwide low-band spectrum, a move that, according to Reuters, sent AT&T and Verizon to their worst one-day drops in more than two decades. Each new step has made the plan look less theoretical. Starlink already sells service in rural areas, but competing directly with the big carriers requires ground infrastructure. TD Cowen estimated that building a nationwide terrestrial network would cost more than $80 billion and take years. Bernstein analysts wrote that "the competitive impact may still be years away, but anticipation alone... is likely to remain an overhang on sector sentiment."

The money for that buildout may be easier to find than it was a quarter ago. On Friday, PhillipCapital upgraded SpaceX to buy from sell, CNBC reported, citing faster revenue from the company's AI unit, which it calls Super Intelligence. The firm raised its fiscal 2026 revenue estimate by 56% to $45.1 billion.

The talks are not finished. Crown Castle's CEO said the company was talking to "all parties," including SpaceX and Amazon, but declined to name customers, and none of the tower companies commented to Reuters. For now, investors are pricing in two things: towers could gain a large new tenant, and carriers could face new price competition.

Why it matters

SpaceX's plan to build a ground network moved closer to reality, and the market reacted by pushing tower owners up and wireless carriers down. Any signed lease deals would make a fourth national carrier more likely.
