Nvidia Weighs Backing Nscale's Debt for Anthropic's West Virginia Data Center

November 1, 2026 · Category: Business & Tech

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has spent the AI boom selling chips and, increasingly, helping finance the companies that buy them. Its latest step goes further. The chipmaker is in talks to guarantee billions of dollars in debt for AI cloud provider Nscale's planned data center in West Virginia, The Information reported and Bloomberg corroborated, according to TechCrunch. Under the proposed residual value guarantee, Nvidia would step in if Nscale defaulted on construction payments, temporarily take over the facility, and help find a buyer and a new tenant. Its earlier support for cloud providers mostly covered leases and chip purchases, not construction.

The customer explains the interest. Anthropic signed a $44.6 billion contract for the first 460-megawatt building on the campus, according to Nscale's IPO filing, and the two companies are discussing a second deal worth about $45 billion, TechCrunch reported. The site is expected to run Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips. Anthropic spreads its spending across several suppliers, including up to $120.5 billion committed to SpaceX compute through 2029, according to its prospectus, Yahoo Finance reported. Keeping the Nscale project on track helps secure Anthropic as a buyer of Nvidia chips.

Nscale is not a sure thing. It had about 25,000 advanced AI chips running in August, a fraction of the nearly 500,000 it plans to deploy, and runoff from the West Virginia site has flooded nearby homes more than once, TechCrunch reported. This month Microsoft pulled out of a planned Nscale site in England after grid power was pushed into the 2030s. The wider group of neoclouds, companies that rent out AI computing power without a cash-rich core business, is also under pressure: shares of CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), Nebius (NASDAQ: NBIS) and IREN (NASDAQ: IREN) had each fallen more than 30% in October as of last week, CNBC reported, according to TechCrunch.

The timing adds to the scrutiny. Nvidia fell 4.2% to $204.64 on Friday in a broad chip sell-off, Reuters reported, as investors questioned returns on AI spending. Nvidia has extended roughly $170 billion in investments and credit support to neoclouds and large customers, according to The Information. A construction guarantee would tie more of that exposure to whether projects like Nscale's get built, and to whether Anthropic, which Blackstone has warned could get a below-investment-grade rating after its IPO, keeps paying for them.

Why it matters

AI data centers are increasingly financed with the support of the chipmakers that supply them, which helps projects move forward but concentrates risk on a few large balance sheets. The talks have not produced a signed deal, and terms could change. This is reporting only, not investment advice.
