U.S. Strikes Iranian Island in Strait of Hormuz as Qatar Presses Both Sides for an Interim Deal
The eight-month U.S.-Iran war produced fresh fire and fresh diplomacy in the same 24 hours. On Monday evening, American forces launched what several U.S. officials described to CBS News as limited defensive strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. A senior official said they came after Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired on a U.S. aircraft. Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said Tuesday that Tehran "retains the right to legitimate self-defense," according to ISNA, as quoted by CBS.
The talks have not stopped. Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman, Majed Al Ansari, said Tuesday that both sides "remain committed to the negotiation process" and are reviewing mediators' proposals, and that Doha is working "towards an interim deal." Reuters, cited by CBS, reported that mediators expect feedback on a new suggestion within 36 hours. Iran says its seven-step plan has been condensed so it could be carried out in two days, with U.S. steps on the first day and the strait reopening on the second, Al Jazeera reported. Tehran's demands are unchanged, though: an end to the U.S. blockade of its ports, a waiver on oil sales and the cancellation of new sanctions before nuclear talks resume, Reuters reported via Al-Monitor.
Washington is sending mixed signals. President Trump wrote that a deal "could happen" and Vice President JD Vance said "we've certainly made some progress," yet Trump has also threatened to resume major strikes after the election. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pressing for another wave of strikes after the midterms, two regional officials told the Associated Press, while other regional allies warn that new attacks could draw in Yemen's Houthis and Iraqi militias. Senior Iranian officials also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's foreign minister on Monday.
At sea, the risk remains real. India said Tuesday that a crew member on the India-flagged MSV Al Jusufi was killed when the vessel was hit by an "unidentified aerial object" off Oman, and Britain's UKMTO counted a record 30 attacks on commercial ships in the region in October, according to CBS. Even so, Brent crude fell 7.4% to $105.03 on Monday on hopes for an agreement.
Why it matters
The Strait of Hormuz carried about a fifth of the world's crude oil before the war, so the gap between talks and strikes shows up quickly in energy prices and shipping costs. With an interim proposal on the table and open threats of renewed strikes after the U.S. vote, the next few days are likely to decide whether the conflict winds down or flares up again.
