Anthropic's Amended IPO Filing Shows $17 Billion Quarter, Slowing Growth and $895 Billion in Compute Commitments
Anthropic has given IPO investors their first look at its third quarter, and the picture is huge revenue with slower growth. In an amended Form S-1 filed Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Claude maker reported $16.96 billion in revenue for the three months ended Sept. 30, up 47% from $11.56 billion in the second quarter, Reuters reported. Sequential growth had been 144% in the second quarter and 132% in the first, according to CNBC. Revenue for the first nine months reached $33.24 billion, roughly 12 times the same period last year.
Profitability moved the other way. Net loss narrowed to $23.29 billion from $66.3 billion in the second quarter, but operations swung to a $567 million loss from $974 million in operating income, Reuters reported. CNBC noted that most of the nine-month net loss of $104 billion came from changes in the fair value of convertible notes and derivative liabilities, not from operations. Anthropic also said it absorbed $5 billion in additional compute costs during the quarter.
The largest new number is the bill for future capacity. The company disclosed purchase commitments and lease agreements of about $895.4 billion, "substantially all of which is related to compute and infrastructure," with partners including Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google. About $69.8 billion falls due within 12 months of Sept. 30. The filing adds a pointed risk factor: some providers "depend on third-party financing or credit support," and if that financing dries up, contracted capacity "may be delayed, repriced, reduced, or not delivered," according to Reuters' account of the filing.
That warning connects Anthropic's IPO to the wider debate over debt-funded AI buildouts. Some current and prospective investors are weighing a valuation of about $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion discussed earlier, Reuters has reported. The Wall Street Journal reported that institutional investors cited choppy markets and political pushback against data centers, according to Yahoo Finance. Amazon, Alphabet and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) are major investors in Anthropic. Anthropic is preparing to begin formally marketing shares next week, Reuters reported, though the amended filing still leaves the price range and deal size blank.

Why it matters
Anthropic's offering is shaping up as a key test of how public markets value AI companies whose growth depends on enormous long-term compute contracts. Slower growth and the financing risk the filing flags shift attention from how fast revenue rises to whether the capacity behind it can be paid for and delivered on time.
