Iran Reads the Midterm Results as a Vote Against War While Hormuz Talks Stall and Tanker Claims Raise Tension

November 4, 2026 · Category: World News

Tehran wasted little time interpreting Tuesday's U.S. election. Iran's parliament speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, wrote on X that Americans had "said NO TO WAR," adding, "We endorse this message," the BBC reported. Iranian officials celebrated the outcome as the region waited to see how a Democratic Congress might affect the war, AP reported. President Donald Trump told The Wall Street Journal the war was partly to blame for his party's losses but that he "would have done it again," according to CBS News, and he told the Financial Times he had no immediate plans to strike Iran, CNBC reported.

The diplomatic track is still open but strained. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said Washington's response to Tehran's seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz "was not convincing," and that the waterway would reopen only if the U.S. addresses all seven, Al Jazeera reported. The conditions reportedly include lifting the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and releasing frozen assets. Qatari mediators, working with Pakistan, expect feedback from both sides within 36 hours on a new proposal, Reuters reported, according to CBS News.

Those talks are unfolding against fresh military friction. Trump confirmed the limited U.S. strikes on Qeshm Island early Tuesday, calling the target an anti-aircraft facility and the operation "a minor attack." On Wednesday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said four "non-compliant" oil tankers using a prohibited route south of the strait struck naval mines and were burning, and that two other vessels were halted. BBC Verify said it had found no evidence that four tankers were destroyed. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that if U.S. attacks are repeated, Iran's response "will take on much broader dimensions," according to Al Jazeera's live coverage.

The stakes go well beyond the two governments. About a fifth of the world's oil and gas shipments normally pass through Hormuz, which has been effectively closed since the war began in late February, the BBC noted. A preliminary deal in June collapsed within weeks.

Why it matters

A Democratic Congress could increase pressure on the White House over war powers and spending, and Tehran appears to be factoring that into its bargaining. Until the Hormuz conditions are resolved, every incident at sea, verified or not, risks derailing mediation and keeps energy prices and shipping exposed to the conflict.
