Dow Posts Its Best Post-Midterm Day Since 1982 While Tesla and SpaceX Lag

November 5, 2026 · Category: Business & Tech

Wall Street's first full session after the midterms split along policy lines. The Dow jumped 1,569 points, or about 3%, for its best day since April 2025 and its largest post-midterm elections single-day gain since 1982, CNN Business reported, citing CFRA Research. Investors read Democratic control of Congress as gridlock that lowers the odds of abrupt fiscal shocks, and Charles Schwab's market desk said the scope of the victory ended fears of a drawn-out count.

Not every ticker joined the rally. Shares of Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) fell more than 4% after the open as Democrats flipped Congress and the Texas governorship, CNBC reported. The Wall Street Journal tracked further declines in the session, with Tesla off about 3.3% and SpaceX about 3.8% in one update. Analysts tied the selling to Musk's heavy Republican spending, possible congressional scrutiny of federal contracts and autonomous-vehicle rules, and a friendlier Texas political climate giving way after the governor's race. Wells Fargo's Ohsung Kwon had warned clients that a Democratic win in Texas could be a "left-tail event" for the AI data-center trade, CNBC noted.

Money rotated toward names expected to face less pressure under Democratic majorities. Schwab flagged Enphase Energy (NASDAQ: ENPH) up more than 3.5% and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR) up almost 7% early Wednesday, while chip and AI-linked names were mixed after overnight earnings from Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) and peers. CoreWeave and Oracle were among the weaker AI-adjacent names early, Schwab said, as investors weighed possible state-level limits on data-center buildouts in technology hubs.

By Thursday morning the market story had two clear threads: a broad relief rally on election clarity, and a company-specific discount on firms most exposed to the political overnight. Closing levels and after-hours prints continued to move; this report cites only the session moves and ranges published by those outlets, not live quotes.

Why it matters

Election nights now reprice whole sectors within hours — defense and politically aligned tech on one side, clean energy and gridlock bets on the other. For operators watching capital costs and permitting, Wednesday's tape was an early map of which policy risks investors think a Democratic Congress and a new Texas governor will actually press. This is reporting only, not investment advice.
