Nasdaq Slides Into Correction as AI Fears Meet Midterm Risk and Anthropic’s Pace Report
Thursday’s tape flipped the midweek relief rally into a broad AI unwind. The Nasdaq 100 fell 6.3% and erased about $2.3 trillion in value, the S&P 500 dropped 4.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell more than 5.5% into correction territory — a decline of at least 10% from its recent high — in what NBC News called both indexes’ worst day since April 2025. Markets had expected Democratic majorities; they had not priced the scale of wins by candidates who campaigned to slow or halt AI data-center construction, including the Texas governorship in the country’s largest data-center market.
Chip and Musk-linked names led the move. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) fell about 9.2% and was the biggest drag on the Dow, NBC said, while the Philadelphia semiconductor index sank 12.3%, its worst day since March 2020. Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) fell about 17%, and Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) tumbled about 9.5% after mixed results overnight with Arm Holdings. Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) each slid nearly 10%; NBC cited paper losses of more than $400 billion across the two since Tuesday’s results as investors weighed tighter regulation after heavy Republican spending by Elon Musk. Closing levels continued to move after the session; this report cites only the session moves those outlets published, not live quotes.
The same week brought a company-specific AI signal outside the tape. Berkeley nonprofit Model Evaluation and Threat Research (METR), invited inside Anthropic ahead of its planned Wall Street debut, estimated the company is improving model capabilities on well-specified tasks around twice as fast as a year earlier, AP News reported. Silicon Report said METR’s central AECI-based estimate was about 1.9 times the March 2024–October 2025 pace (95% interval roughly 1.5x–2.8x), with AI assistance to human researchers — not compute growth alone — as the main driver, though Anthropic redacted much of the evidence METR called most informative and the group stressed high uncertainty. The juxtaposition is the story: public markets are discounting near-term U.S. data-center and political risk even as private frontier labs report faster internal progress.

Why it matters
Election outcomes now reprice AI infrastructure within a session, while independent safety reviews can reset how investors and policymakers talk about the pace of model progress. Thursday’s indexes and the METR findings are reported market and research facts, not investment advice or price predictions.
